The Surge Impedance Tester was developed by Hokkei Industries Co., Ltd.
of Kanazawa, Japan to provide an accurate method for measuring the impedance of electric power transmission
tower grounding electrodes. Although the target value in ground system design is almost always expressed as
resistance, when equipment is hit with lightning or power related surges, the impedance of the grounding electrode
may be the most important factor determining if it survives. A very long vertical ground rod will provide low
resistance, but it may be unable to disperse current quickly enough to protect equipment when faced with a
lightning strike. The Surge Impedance Tester provides a method for checking this important performance characteristic.
Features
- Uses a sharp impulse, similar to actual lightning
- Impedance is calculated based on inductance, capacitance and resistance
- Transmission tower ground impedance can be measured with overhead ground wire connected
- Portable: System contained in two cases
- Easy to use
- Digital impedance value display
